Rowing
Rowing - Summer Sports - Titans Sports - Tauranga Boys' College
Teacher in Charge: Tanya Williams [email protected]
Director of Rowing: Richard Gee [email protected]
Coaches: Sarah Coatsworth, Nicky Austin
To our prospective new rowers and parents, we offer a very warm welcome!
Rowing is a unique sport: Success demands individual mastery of a skill, then application of this skill in a team environment. No individual has ever crossed the line first, without the help of his crew, on and/or off water. Rowing is about the crew, your mates and doing your best for the team.
Rowing offers great reward and lifelong friendships to those who make the effort. The boys learn teamwork, resilience and belief in hard work. These are values that can be carried through all aspects of life at school and beyond.
The culmination of our season is in March 2026 - the Aon Maadi Regatta - the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships. This season it will be at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel. Tauranga Boys College has a long and proud legacy in Rowing and we are working hard to build a robust and sustainable program to enable the boys to compete against the best schools in New Zealand, once again.
I am looking forward to a great season and I would urge all parents to become involved and support their son. Boys, I wish you every success in your rowing journey.

LEARN TO ROW - Autumn/ Winter terms
Sessions will be held at various times, beginning in Term 2. For novices, these will generally consist of one session on the indoor rower ( erg) one body conditioning and one on- water session on a Sunday. You will also be notified of Learn To Row times in the TBC Rowing noticeboard, school notices, on the TBC Learn to Row WhatsApp group.
Come as much as you can as the more you train at this time, the quicker you will get better. It does not matter if you are unable to make every session.
*There will be a cost of $150 for Term 2 Learn to Row for Novice Rowers.
TRAINING:
On-water training is done in the afternoons at Bay of Plenty Coast Rowing Club at Wairoa River, near Bethlehem and on the weekends, usually Sunday mid morning. Transport after school will be supplemented by the school minivan, if available but we rely on parents to organise getting their rower to the river, with carpooling as an option. Off-water sessions are in the school training gym at the Devoy Squash Centre, diagonal to school on Devonport Rd, or at school.
TRAINING TIMES AND SEASON:
Rowing is a summer sport. The rowing regatta season starts in September and goes through to March/April the following year. Novice Rowers start in the Learn to Row program (April til August) then continue to train and begin competing in regattas from November.
Winter training may involve one on-water and an off-water session. On-water training sessions usually last around 2 hours.
Training for all our rowers is usually in the afternoons during the week and on a Saturday or Sunday morning around 8-9am all season (except just before the two big school regattas in March when training is increased).
More experienced rowers may be offered optional training on a Sunday morning for interprovincial squads.
It is OK if your Rowing training is minimised during the winter season, and we strongly encourage you to pursue a winter sport.
Training ramps up at the end of Term 3 and continues through the holidays into Term 1. At this time, you will be training multiple times per week, whether on or off water.
TRAINING CAMP
We have a Rowing camp from January 2nd to 7th, 2026 at Bay of Plenty Coast Rowing Club. It is important to attend this camp as it is often an opportunity for coaches to begin the process of choosing places for the rowers in crews for the main regattas.
