Clay Target Shooting
Clay Target Shooting - Summer Sports - Titans Sports - Tauranga Boys' College
Shaun Gwillim and Matthew Clark attended the New Zealand Clay Target Association Skeet Nationals in Christchurch last week. Both boys had a great week and achieved the following results. In the NZ .410 Gauge Skeet Championship Matthew placed 1st in A Grade and was 1st Junior. In the NZ 20 Gauge Skeet Championship Matthew placed 3rd in A grade and was 1st Junior and Shaun was 3rd B Grade. In the NZ Skeet Doubles Championship Shaun placed 2nd in B grade. In the NZ Skeet Handicap Championship both boys shot 49/50 in qualifying. In this shoot you get given bonus targets based on your grade so Matthew went into the shoot off with 1 spare target and Shaun with 5. This equated to the number of misses they were allowed before they were eliminated from the competition. Matthew shot a further 113 targets before his last miss to earn a credible 6th place in New Zealand. Shaun shot a further 158 targets before his last miss to end up placing 2nd in New Zealand and 1st Junior. This was an amazing achievement for both boys as there was over 110 shooters competing from both New Zealand and overseas. After having done this marathon effort the boys then had to shoot another round of 25 targets as part of the North Island Team they had qualified for during the year. They along with their other team member shot an amazing 74/75 to beat their South Island competitors. The final day of competition was the NZ Skeet Championship. While both boys did not medal in this event their scores were good enough to earn a place in the NZ Junior Skeet Team for the Australia/New Zealand Trans Tasman Skeet Postal Challenge. This was shot on the Sunday and the results will be known in the New Year. Matthew’s scores over the whole week also saw him win the cup for Junior all gauges High Gun with a Score of 425/450.
