Super 8 Tennis - 2018
As hosts for the 2018 tournament, Tauranga Boys’ were fortunate enough to have two teams playing due to the late withdrawal of other schools. While they found results hard to come by, the 2nd team were always competitive and we look forward to seeing these players challenge their way into the 1st team in years to come.
Day one saw the Tauranga Boys’ 1st team play New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Although several of the matches were close, the final result was a resounding 6 - 0 win to Tauranga.
Day two began with an impressive 4 - 2 victory against Napier Boys’ High School, giving Tauranga Boys’ top place in their pool. In the semi final Tauranga met long time rivals Palmerston North Boys’ High School. Outstanding singles matches from Caelan Potts, Corban Crowther, Jackson Loomb and Lucas Darling gave the team an unassailable 4 – 0 lead meaning that the doubles were not required.
The final tie of the tournament was against Hamilton Boys’ High School. With the exception of Crowther, the singles didn’t go Tauranga’s way. Going in to the doubles 3 – 1 down meant splitting the regular combinations to try to win both matches well enough to win on count-back. To their credit the doubles combinations of Potts/Loomb and Crowther/Darling fought hard to win both matches and bring the final score to 3 – 3. Unfortunately Hamilton finished ahead on count-back to win the title for 2018. With the team still relatively young we look forward to bringing the shield back next year.
TBC 1 – Caelan Potts, Corban Crowther, Jackson Loomb, Lucas Darling, Hamish Roberts.
TBC 2 – Carrigan Hartley, Jack Blow, Michael Chrisp, Nick Rea, Bosse Thiel.
